"Chasseur pattern" dark blue wool felt cap; black patent leather visor which is flat and somewhat rectangular; soft crown with circular, countersunk top; embroidered front insignia with number "3" framed by branches of laurel; chin strap made of knotted gold cord secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with monogram "GAR"; black textile lining.

According to the accession records, this cap belonged to the donor's father, David P. Davis, who served from 1861 to 1863 as a private in the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry, commonly called "Duryee's Zouaves" or the "Red-Legged Devils." He must have acquired the cap sometime after the Civil War, however, as the maker is not listed at the address indicated on the label until 1870.

Dark blue (black?) wool Naval commander's double-breasted dress coat with double collar; attachments on the shoulders for straps; 9 buttons down each side of the front, buttons cast with eagle perched on an anchor encircled by stars; closed sleeves (no cuffs) with 4 bands of gilt lacing around each wrist with a star above the lacing; 4 panels across the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button at the bottom of each side of split skirt; coat lined with dark green silk, horizontal slit pocket at the left breast; sleeves lined with white silk.

According to the accession records, the donor, John Ward Dunsmore (1856-1945), was one of America's leading painters of murals and historical subjects in the late 19th and early 20th century. He was best known for his realistic and accurate genre paintings of the events surrounding the American Revolution and Early Republic. His dutiful research and attention to detail lead to the creation of vivid paintings that became a part of the nation’s historical imagery. The Society owns about thirty of his completed paintings and hundreds of his preliminary works. During World War I, Dunsmore was a major in the army in charge of Red Cross activities, serving at U.S. Army General Hospital No. 5 and at U.S. Army General Hospital No. 41.

Black or dark blue wool Naval officer's double-breasted tailcoat; markings of epaulette attachments at the shoulders (epauletts missing); closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye) trimmed around the outside edge with gilt lacing and lined with dark blue velvet; 9 buttons down each side of the front, sleeves trimmed with 3 bands of gilt lacing against red ground; 4 panels on the back of the bodice, with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, 2 buttons at the bottom of the tails; bodice lined with black twill-weave silk, breast lightly padded and quilted, slant slit pocket at the left breast lined with white linen, tails lined with white silk, with a horizontal slit pocket at the top of the right tail; all buttons cast with a spread each perched on an anchor encircled by 8 stars.
